Akio Kashiwara

Akio Kashiwara is a Japanese mathematician and professor at the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences at Kyoto University. He is known for his work in algebraic analysis, representation theory, and algebraic geometry. He is also a recipient of the Japan Academy Prize, the highest honor in Japanese mathematics. Kashiwara's research focuses on the theory of D-modules, which are modules over the ring of differential operators. He has made significant contributions to the theory of perverse sheaves, which are used to study singularities of algebraic varieties. He has also developed the theory of microlocal analysis, which is used to study the behavior of solutions to partial differential equations. Kashiwara has written several books, including Sheaves on Manifolds, which is considered a classic in the field of algebraic geometry. He has also written several papers on topics such as the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence, the theory of perverse sheaves, and the theory of D-modules. Kashiwara has received numerous awards for his work, including the Japan Academy Prize, the Asahi Prize, and the Order of Culture. He is a member of the Japan Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is also a foreign member of the French Academy of Sciences.
