Anthony McCarten

Anthony McCarten is an acclaimed New Zealand novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. He is best known for his work on the Academy Award-winning films The Theory of Everything and Bohemian Rhapsody. McCarten has also written several novels, plays, and screenplays, including the stage play Ladies in Lavender, which was adapted into a feature film in 2004. McCarten was born in 1961 in New Plymouth, New Zealand. He studied English and History at Victoria University of Wellington, and later earned a Master of Arts in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia. He began his career as a playwright, writing several plays that were performed in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. In 2006, McCarten wrote the screenplay for the film The Last King of Scotland, which was nominated for an Academy Award. His most recent work is the screenplay for Bohemian Rhapsody, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2019. McCarten has also written several novels, including Death of a Superhero, which was adapted into a feature film in 2011.
