Manal Al-Sharif

Manal Al-Sharif is a Saudi Arabian women's rights activist and computer security specialist. She is best known for her role in the Women2Drive campaign, which sought to overturn the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia. Al-Sharif was born in Mecca in 1979 and grew up in a conservative family. She studied computer science at King Abdulaziz University and later worked as a computer security specialist for the Saudi government. In 2011, Al-Sharif began the Women2Drive campaign, which sought to overturn the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia. She was arrested and detained for nine days after posting a video of herself driving on YouTube. Following her release, Al-Sharif continued to advocate for women's rights in Saudi Arabia, including the right to drive. She has since become a prominent figure in the global women's rights movement, speaking at conferences and events around the world. Al-Sharif has also written a memoir, Daring to Drive, which chronicles her experience as a women's rights activist in Saudi Arabia. In addition to her activism, Al-Sharif is a sought-after speaker and consultant on cyber security and digital privacy. She is a passionate advocate for women's rights and continues to fight for gender equality in her home country.
