Jack G. Shaheen
Jack G. Shaheen is an American author, scholar, and media critic. He is best known for his work on the representation of Arabs and Muslims in the media. Shaheen was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1935 and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1957. He went on to earn a master's degree in mass communication from Syracuse University in 1959.
Shaheen has written several books on the subject of media representation of Arabs and Muslims, including Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People (2001), which was nominated for an American Book Award, and Guilty: Hollywood's Verdict on Arabs After 9/11 (2009). He has also written extensively on the subject of Arab and Muslim stereotypes in film and television, and has appeared in numerous documentaries and television programs.
Shaheen has been honored with numerous awards for his work, including the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee's Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Arab American Museum's Lifetime Achievement Award, and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee's Lifetime Achievement Award. He has also been inducted into the Arab-American Hall of Fame. Shaheen continues to be an advocate for the fair and accurate representation of Arabs and Muslims in the media.
