Johanna Spyri
Johanna Spyri (1827-1901) was a Swiss author best known for her children's books, particularly the classic novel Heidi. Born in Hirzel, Switzerland, Spyri was the daughter of a pastor and grew up in a rural environment. She was educated at home and later attended a boarding school in Zurich. After her father's death, Spyri moved to Zurich and worked as a governess. She wrote her first book, A Leaf on Vrony's Grave, in 1871. Her most famous work, Heidi, was published in 1880 and has been translated into over 50 languages. Spyri's other works include Gritli's Children, Aunts and Their Nieces, and The Story of a Sturdy Oak. Her books are known for their vivid descriptions of nature and their moral lessons. Spyri's works have been adapted into films, television shows, and plays, and she is considered one of the most influential authors of children's literature.
